a child disappeared from the world in the late 1980s.

he then grew up in a place he's come to know as Hellscape, a world of cast-offs ever awaiting the salvation of The One Above Whose Name We Do Not Speak, attended constantly by a Saint and under the watchful, terrifying eye of the Church ever-writhing in the vaults overhead. originally found and raised by a defector known as Asphodel who was loving, but whose claims to not believe in The One Above eventually became too much for the child to bear, he ran and now continues to run from all the forces trying to exert control over his life.

unfortunately, the place he ran to and eventually collapsed in had an existing inhabitant, who was happy to move in with Capable. or, rather, into.

- HELLSCAPE ITSELF -

a world where seemingly all the sapient inhabitants save one are former humans, transported through methods unknown and trapped there for reasons the residents squabble over.

it's a place encased in cold, slippery, impassable rock but huge enough to contain multiple biomes and even a mostly-frozen, probably-not-water sea. major locations include the crumbling Cityscape and Meatgrowths, Living Metal Pit, the Cratered Snowfields and the aforementioned sea. the general temperature is feverish - very cold and even snow-coated in most places, but a few inches into the soil it's sweltering.

here there is no sun, but a dull reddish light illuminates the place at all times, and in one particular spot below the highest point of the stone ceiling it's possible to see light given off by the Church as it squirms against the rock face in the tunnels above. most residents avoid doing this.

the wildlife is varied and, while alien, many would rate as very beautiful - most creatures are bioluminescent and dizzying, shimmering colors. terrestrial creatures are largely arthropod-like but sizes vary, ranging from tiny to the size of a deer. there is also quite a bit of sealife, none of it familiar and with the most terrifying things typically being seen out in the distance breaching through the ice, luckily not coming very close to settled areas.
